Receiving standing ovations everynight, the cast of Billy Elliot - performed at Easington Welfare - have secured their place in the regional finals of a national competition to find the best production of the famous musical.
Based on the film, the musical has been a leading show in the West End for five years and to celebrate this the producers encouraged youth theatre groups across the country to form 'Billy Youth Theatres.' Each theatre group then produced their own version of the musical, with the best from each region going through to area finals.
Shotton Hall Theatre School has got through to the North East regional finals on the 16th May at the Gala Theatre in Durham. If they win this round for the best performance then they will be invited to go to London and will be recognised nationally.
The leading role of Billy Elliot was played by Sam Burrell from year 7. He was ably supported by a cast and crew of students from across all year groups. their outstanding performances were made even more poignant by the setting in Easington, the location of the orignal film which focusses on the 1980s Miners's Strike.
Good luck to all of the cast and crew for the regional auditions. |
